Keyera operates one of the largest natural gas and natural gas liquids midstream businesses in Canada. Midstream companies typically own raw gas pipelines and processing plants to gather and process the raw natural gas before it is injected as sales gas into long-distance pipeline systems for transportation to end-use markets. The midstream sector also includes facilities for the fractionation, storage and transportation of natural gas liquids, or NGLs, which are by-products of natural gas processing, and include ethane, propane, butane and condensate.
Keyera’s operations are conducted through three business segments: Gathering and Processing; NGL Infrastructure; and Marketing.
Most natural gas requires some processing before it can be delivered to end use customers. In Keyera’s Gathering and Processing segment, Keyera gathers and processes raw natural gas, providing an essential service for our customers. Natural gas from producers’ wells is transported to our gathering pipelines for delivery to our processing plants, where impurities are removed and economically viable products are separated from the gas stream.
With extensive gathering pipelines and gas plants located in some of the most prospective, gas prone areas of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, Keyera’s Gathering and Processing business can offer flexible services tailored to producer needs. Most plants are able to process both sweet and sour gas and extract valuable products like NGLs from the raw gas stream.
Our second business line, the processing, transportation and storage of NGLs and crude oil, which we call our NGL Infrastructure business, involves the further separation of NGLs removed at the gas plants into products such as propane, butane and condensate. We also provide transportation, storage and terminalling services for these products at our facilities in Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan.
Our third business line is our Marketing business. Using our NGL infrastructure and transportation assets, our marketing professionals purchase NGLs from natural gas producers and sell them to customers across North America.
The tight integration of our three business lines allows us to create and capture value along the midstream value chain. The ownership and operation of this diverse asset base enables Keyera to adapt to the ever-changing business environment and presents many new opportunities to grow our business and provide incremental services to our customers.
